What is anxiety?

If you experience anxiety, you know how debilitating it can be. You may find yourself feeling overwhelmed, restless, beset by intrusive thoughts, or grappling with sleep disturbances, without an obvious cause. It’s as if a malfunctioning alarm system is ringing loudly but with no actual threat in sight. Chances are you’ve tried various solutions, such as self-help books or different therapies, with limited or no lasting effect. Why is that?

Anxiety is an evolutionary response designed to protect us. Historically, it helped our ancestors avoid life-threatening situations, such as predators or dangerous falls. It therefore evolved as a subconscious reaction, allowing for quick responses without the need for conscious thought, significantly enhancing survival chances. That’s why you don’t consciously think about having a phobic response, panic attack, or social anxiety - it ‘just happens’, automatically.

Because anxiety operates at a subconscious level, it is largely resistant to logical reasoning. Many traditional therapies struggle to create lasting change because they try to address anxiety at this conscious logical level, which only tends to manage or mask the symptoms. To effect meaningful and enduring change, it’s crucial to address anxiety at its source - the subconscious mind. Forms of Anxiety

General Anxiety

Characterised by a broad sense of feeling uneasy and overwhelmed. It is often accompanied by excessive worry, intrusive thoughts, and feelings of unworthiness and inadequacy. It is often a vague feeling where the person doesn’t know why they are feeling anxious.

Phobias

These are very specific fears such as dogs, birds, heights or public speaking. People with a phobia often feel safe in life except when faced with a trigger or cue. They also tend to be aware of a negative past experience that caused the phobic response.

Panic Attacks

An exaggerated anxiety response, where anxiety escalates rapidly, resulting in a panic attack accompanied by extreme physical sensations sometimes mistaken for a heart attack. Often, the fear of a panic attack increases the likelihood of it occurring, creating a destructive cycle.

How can hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy is today considered one of the most effective treatments for anxiety disorders, with an over 82 % success rate within 6 sessions. It’s success is largely attributed to it’s unique ability to update the subconscious mind.

Research indicates that only 5% of our thoughts, feelings, and actions are under conscious and logical control, while the remaining 95% are regulated automatically by the subconscious mind. This is especially true for anxiety as it is an instinctual survival mechanism. The key to overcoming psychological challenges is therefore in making the essential changes at the subconscious level. This is what distinguishes hypnotherapy from many of the so called traditional talk therapies, as it can directly modify subconscious processing.

By cultivating a state of deep relaxation and heightened attention, hypnosis creates a unique state that facilitates influence over the subconscious mind. During this process, the stress centres of the brain are deeply calmed and go offline, allowing the hypnotherapist and client to safely and securely analyse triggers, and update the subconscious with responses that are far more optimal and resourceful. In this way, positive states such as confidence, calm, and control can be naturally induced, becoming the new spontaneous and automatic way of responding.
